We've been mystified by an awful stink in the truck -- like hamburger gone bad! (Not laughing about that!) No stinky clothes in the back seat, no varmints smushed in the engine compartment, nothing but paper in the glove compartment**, . . . couldn't find a reason. And hanging a green pine tree deoderizer just changed the stink to a different bad smell. We were just about ready to ask Brickner's mechanics to look inside the dash and air vents.

This morning I looked in the back seat again, on the passenger side this time: aha! One green pepper that rolled out of the farm market sack (two weeks ago!) had deteriorated into a puddle of yuck. And we are so lucky: the pepper had been residing in a hard plastic tray area alongside the seat; not on the seat, not in the carpet on the floor. Easy to soak up and wash out. Also explains why we paid for 10 green peppers and had only 9 to cut up for the freezer.

Second laugh: As long as I was mopping out that little tray I cleaned off the dash and pockets in the doors
. . . and found 4 really old gas receipts. In Nov, 1999 (12 years ago; the truck was brand new then) regular unleaded gas was $1.289 per gallon. By Feb. 2000 gas had gone up to $1.499. And 6 years ago, in Nov. 2005, it was $2.399 per gallon. Today we paid $3.699 / gallon.

** "Stink in the glove compartment" reminded me of an episode with the Studebaker truck Pa drove when we were kids. One spring day, while out on Town of Birch business (Pa was on the Town Board), Pa picked up a baby skunk from alongside the road. Needing to finish the Town business first, he stashed the baby in the glove compartment. Skunky was too small to eject musk himself, but he kind of reeked of it anyway. Once home Pa built a cage for the baby and we kids fed it and kept it all summer, until the family dog worried the wire loose on the cage and let Skunky escape. Needless to say, Ma was not pleased about transporting skunks in the glove box.LJHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00545567121588273476noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6604544271613986559.post-34337719727926321342011-09-15T16:42:00.001-05:002011-09-15T16:47:27.340-05:00Spider Tale

Where's the spider? (In the first photos, that is)
Oh, it took a black background to get the camera to focus on spider, not on leaves. So 2nd pic (gray-ish background) is spider's front side, and 3rd pic is his back side . . . . And since he/she was head-down in the web, that's how the photos are too.
These four and forty other photos of the 2011 Steam Engine Show at the Kurt Umnus Farm near Edgar, WI are on my Webshots site: http://good-times.webshots.com/album/580788617zTqbTw
The steam engine show is huge: must be 80 acres of displays, flea market, crafts, food stands, plowing demonstrations, a mini fly-in, camper area, history, music . . . . and another 80 acres of parking! The photo album is mainly all about the tractor parade. The samples here show two big steam engines, a threshing machine with two wing feeders, and a wooden model tractor.

[Good grief; this is my first posting in 2011 and the year is 2/3 gone. Take it to mean all is going well; nothing drastic has happened. If you'd like to view my year so far, there are short comments and a few other photos on my "Wall" at Facebook. Once on Facebook, search for "Laurel Hoffmann" of Marathon, WI. But you might have to "friend" me to see all . . . .]
They were given GPS points and clues to about nine specific historical markers (or buildings). As each small group reached their first destination they needed to learn about the significance of that marker and answer a couple thought-provoking questions before getting coordinates and clue for the next site. Of course, we "docents" at each site tried to add more to the students' information. The docents also learned new, neat stuff too!

The kids did very well. There was no grumbling about the weather; they were focused on solving their questions. Perhaps the hiking helped warm them up. (And there was hot pizza at the end of the trip.)
Here the WW II (and Korean war and Vietnam war) markers commemorate the Marathon County soldiers who gave their lives to the cause. The question here was: how many women are named on these markers? [Ans: none.] And why? [Ans: Because women were not allowed in combat then. I think the 1990's, the Gulf War, is when women first went into combat.]
A two-inch rain and thunder storm that grumbled around most of last night raised river levels considerably for today. There was enough water that these boys/young men deemed it safe to jump off the rocks at Eau Claire Dells in eastern Marathon County. Although the series of photos looks like only one guy in action, there were really 3 guys, all dressed alike and about the same size. We're guessing the drop was about 15 feet from their take-off spot. We took a ride around the "block" -- around several blocks -- and saw some serious crop damage in a swath about 1.5 miles wide going from NW to SE through the towns of Hamburg, Berlin, and Maine -- somewhat parallel to County Hwy A.

Corn and soybeans shredded by hail, for example. Grain fields flattened. A few uprooted trees, a bunch of broken trees and downed branches. I think one part of Hwy A was closed off a while due to downed trees, branches and power poles. One metal shed roof on Hwy A was peeled partly off. One Ginseng garden had slatted wooden shade panels going every which way; another couple ginseng gardens with black shade nets ripped loose. Did not take pictures. Local newspaper's pictures were mostly of in-town stuff; doesn't look like they got out to the boonies.

However! if the old German folk saying holds true, we should be just about done with this year's storm track. The saying -- in English, because I can't do the Plattdeutsch version -- says that if there is a hard enough rain on mid-summer's day (June 21) to raise little bubbles when it hits the pavement, which was true here this June, then there will be another 6 weeks of wet weather. ("Then the farmer can sleep"; I guess because it's too wet to go in the fields.)
It's past Mid-Summer by 2 weeks, hot and muggy now, but our mid-Wisconsin 86 degrees is nothing compared to the misery (102 degrees) in New York and the Northeast.
The glorious freckled white lily is called "Muscadet," a gift from Agnes Dahlman. The petals span 10 inches -- honest truth! The lilies below are both the Orienpet type. As Agnes said, they are lilies on steroids; very vigorous, nice and tall and sturdy, and prolific bloomers.
Remember the old song that went "How do the trees put on their robes of green?"
"They leave them out."
I caught our soft maple doing that last evening (April 21), then made four "kaleidoscopes" from the photos. The original images are at the end of this entry.

This year's kaleidoscopes are maybe not as good as last year's -- see the June 2009 entry for comparison.
The sunsets range from March 22 (just past the equinox) (the top photos) to tonight, April 7 (bottom two). In between were a spring shower and a hawk of some kind.
Crocus have had a longish blooming time: were ready to open about March 14, then waited out a cold week, and have been at it ever since. Daffodils are close to opening. The first batch of tomato seedlings are 5 inches high, but have had to stay inside this week.LJHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00545567121588273476noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6604544271613986559.post-43477749225282593992010-01-29T15:31:00.002-06:002010-01-29T15:51:36.089-06:00Middle School Kids Do Real Research (Genealogy)

As usual, these photos are all within 1 mile of our house. For two of them I just opened a window and took the shots. I was impressed that the bald eagle stayed put in the tree all the time I was tromping up and down the county road, taking its picture. This eagle (or some eagle) has been in that tree frequently this winter.

If you Gooogle "Santa Purse" you can find other versions and directions for making your own.

But basically all you do is buy a pre-made Santa hat, cut it in half horizontally, sew the bottom closed, add a lining inside if desired and sew the cut-off hat top (with pom-pom) just inside the open edge of the purse to make a flap closure. Handles or straps may be added as desired: my sister bought 2-inch wide fur trim, folded and sewed it in half lengthwise and sewed the ends into the purse for a long strap.

Our craft group -- the 6 of us call ourselves the Sugar Maple Crafters -- spent all sessions this year creating homemade decorations for a 6 foot Christmas tree at the Wausau Festival of Trees. (90-some trees and decorations are all donated, raffled off, and proceeds go to Wausau Aspirus Hospice House. The project raises around $150,000 annually.) This was our group's first attempt. We are anxiously waiting to see how well our tree does. Below are views of a few other entries at the 2009 Festival of Trees.
From bottom up:

Rib Falls United Methodist Church, all shiny white in its new (vinyl) siding.
We are getting to the end of a two year project to strengthen foundations, add a multi-purpose room, install new doors. The window trim and the bell tower need painting yet . . . . Talked of a leap of faith at the beginning of the project, but what it took was lots of baby steps.

The pheasants (roosters here, but there are hens too) live on a game farm in Taylor County, WI. Multiple pens along a half mile of County Highway M, so that means hundreds (thousands?) of birds. I don't know much about the farm; guessing the birds are raised there and released elsewhere for hunting. Notice the small blue helmets on each rooster: maybe they are intended to protect their eyes? Do pheasants not "play nicely together" when space is somewhat crowded? The farm is near Perkinstown in the Chequamegon Natl Forest, west of Medford and east of Gilman.

The sunsets are from two successive Sundays in November. This is a bonus for living on a hilltop.LJHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00545567121588273476noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6604544271613986559.post-27857077384482452692009-10-09T11:02:00.007-05:002009-10-09T11:27:35.873-05:00Featuring Red, Red Maples<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I suppose some cameras have features that will do that auto-magically.

The experiment works best with photos that have a decided diagonal line of interest.LJHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00545567121588273476noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6604544271613986559.post-33985023806104601022009-04-10T11:43:00.000-05:002009-04-10T12:17:49.679-05:00

A grand experiment, this is, for an old "big iron" computer programmer. The primary reason for being here is to create a (better) way to share photos with friends and relatives. Seems like Cousin Tom's photos look so much better on his Blogger site that I'll try this route too. It's free, aint it!?

These photos are a "Stump Study" taken at the Big Eau Pleine Resevoir in north central Wisconsin on April 4, 2009.

Old pine stumps are a feature in many Wisconsin reservoirs. First the land was logged off, then the Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) and WI Public Service (the power company) built dams and created the reservoirs in the 1930's, 1940's. The stumps have been underwater many years (a boater's bane), but recent drought and water draw-downs have exposed them. Also, water currents removed sand/silt from the lower roots, exposing them more completely.

2008-2009 Winter fish kill was very severe (80% + die-off) in Eau Pleine Reservoir due to: (1) low water level -- DNR does annual drawdown to only 22% of capacity, (2) fertilizer and manure runoff encourages vegetation growth on the bottom, which dies and rots which in turn "eats up" oxygen and (3) old aerators can't keep oxygen levels up in winter. Elected not to show photos of dead fish!

LJHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00545567121588273476noreply@blogger.com0
